Running balance formula for income and expenses
A running total down a column: income so far minus spending so far.
The problem
Show a balance that updates on every row.
Sample data
Income in B, spending in C, starting at row 2. By row 3 the balance is -50.
Formula
In D3, fill down:
=SUM(B$2:B3)-SUM(C$2:C3)
Result in row 3: -50. The first cell is locked with $; the end moves as you fill down.
