Calculate days overdue for an invoice in Excel and Google Sheets
One formula that returns how many days an unpaid invoice is past its due date, and zero if paid.
The problem
You want to know whether an invoice is late and by how many days.
Sample data
Column C is Due, column E is Paid (blank means unpaid), and F2 holds the as-of date 2026-10-25. A fixed date keeps the sample answer from moving.
| Row | Due | Paid | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 2026-10-10 | (blank) | 15 |
| 2 | any | paid | 0 |
| 4 | (blank) | 10 |
Formula
=IF(E3<>"",0,MAX(0,F3-C3))
Result for row 3: 15. Days until due, for a future invoice: =C5-F5 gives 11 in the sample.
Excel vs Sheets
Identical in both. In your own sheet, replace the as-of cell with TODAY() for live results.
